Class Descriptions Session 1 • May 20-23, 2005

Annabella DeMattei Eastwood

1. Sacred Footbathing: part 1

Sacred footbathing, part 1 takes the participant through the experience of preparing for the Sacred footbath, Lava Piedi--Palma Christi. From making assesments and "opening up the garden gate" to handling flowers and herbs. laying out of materials and readying infused oils and salt mixtures participants working in pairs will learn to look for, listen to, and share plant and people songs.

2. Sacred Footbathing: part 2

Sacred footbathing, part 2 focuses on the Sacred footbath--Lava Piedi - Palma Christi. In partners, participants will prepare to administer the Sacred footbath; learn how to warm up the client, prepare the water, select pomanders and/or essences, offer a color blessings, sing the plant and people songs and bathe and massage the feet. Each partner will both give and receive a Sacred footbath.

3. Lavender Fairy Class for Mid-kids

We will share an experience and learn how to make Lavender Wands and Magic Fairy Dust. Beginning with identifying flower fairies and exploring their ways, we will continue by searching for fairies in flowers and herbs. We will sip lavender tea, taste madelienes and listen to a story about Lavender Fairy. We will leave with a Lavender Wand and the knowledge of how it can help us, as well as the knowledge of the ingredients in our packages of Magic Fairy Dust.

1. Homeopathy for Children & Infants

This class covers briefly basic concepts of homeopathy, and presents 10 first aid and acute remedies useful in the household (nine of them drawn from herbal tradition). No previous knowledge of homeopathy is required.

2. Homeopathy: Plant Spirit Medicine: part 1 and part 2

This class covers the historical relationship between the herbal and homeopathic traditions, the elaboration of herbal lore through homeopathic provings, the development of energetic qualities of herbs through the processes of trituration and potentization, the preparation of potencies from tinctures and triturations, and materia medica from a number of herbs used in homeopathy. Some previous knowledge of homeopathy is useful, but not required

3. Bach Flower Remedies

This class introduces the use of Bach Flower Remedies as a gentle but powerful system of emotional healing. Students will learn to associate Bach's seven categories of remedies to the seven chakras, and to appreciate the uses of the remedies to bring chakras into balance on an emotional level. No previous experience with flower remedies is required.

3. Preventing & Treating Cervical Dysplasia (Advanced)

Before there is cervical cancer (a major cause of cancer deaths in women) there is almost always cervical dysplasia - which is 100% treatable! What is cervical cancer and what isn't? Why does it happen? What do those x@#$&* Pap results mean? What is the conventional treatment? What are our alternatives? Protocols for nutritional and herbal prevention and treatment will be reviewed, including herbal escharotic treatments.

4. Show Me the Comfrey, Please (All levels)

An in-depth look at one of the most popular medicinal herbs of all time: Symphytum officinalis, and her wild close cousin: Hound's Tongue [Cynoglossum spp.] We'll look at the many important historical and current medicinal uses, "livestock" impact, and the issues surrounding the toxicity and safe use of these magnificent Plants with their famous pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

1. INTENSIVE: Integrative Cancer Medicine (Advanced)

Many patients choose to do surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy but also want holistic support. Rather than give you a recipe, I will present a context within which the herbalist can make good decisions, based on my many years of experience. One thing Kami has learned in 15 years of working with clients is that it helps if your medicines taste good! Together we will make glycerites, glycerine solvent exchange tinctures, cordials and more. Cordials can be used in drinks, meal preparation and many other daily use applications. Lots of recipes and samples.

2. Herbal Dream Pillows (All levels)

Make your own fragrant herbal dream pillows that are the perfect gift for all occasions and belong in every room of the house. 3. Women's Blood Mysteries (All levels)

How do we experience our female cycles of menarche, menstruation, fertility, and menopause? Most Women experience levels of shame, pain, and lack of awareness. More than 600,000 American women have hysterectomies every year and the use of harmful pharmaceutical drugs are commonplace for every phase of a Women's cycle. With more than fifteen years experience in teaching Women's Health, Kami helps women to work with the physiology of their cycles. Using herbs and ceremony let us embrace the power of our bleeding time and together we can re-weave a cultural context for honoring the female womb cycles as sacred.

1. INTENSIVE: Summer Qigong

A full set of qigong to live with you for the rest of your earthly stay! These are expansive and feel-good exercises. We will go over them enough so that you will remember how to do them after you leave. These can, of course, be done with aromatherapy or simply be in a garden of roses or a field of lavender or the middle of a forest!

2. Qigong for Breast Health

This class was originally offered as a part of the class with Lois Johnson for Breast Health. There are qigong exercises, acupressure points, meditations, an energetic breast exam and other energetic exercises. Consider this as an essential part of the Breast Health Class.

3. Tuning the Organs With Sound and Aromatherapy

This will be fun! We'll do 3 specific methods of using sound with aromatherapy. A fun and packed class! We'll partner up for part of the class and we'll give voice to our organs and dialog.

1. Flower Essence Watercolor: part 1

The lecture will include information on the background understanding of the history of flower essences within their traditional holistic health uses and color theory plus Dr. Bach teachings. Each class will be geared for all levels of experience in watercolor work but please limited to adults and children over 13 years of age.

2. Flower Essence Watercolor: part 2

This class will give you a background understanding of the history of flower essences within their traditional holistic uses and color theory. See how and why Flower Essence Watercolor work is different from tap water watercolor painting by virtue of the vibrational pattern of the flower released in the water. This work is subtle but profound.

The second half would be a demonstration of how to make and bottle flower essences and "How to paint with Flower Essence Water Color" by the instructor. The demonstration will include tips on how to be a better watercolorist and letting go creatively. It will illustrate the technique to properly respect and inter act with your essence choices. Also, to learn to maximize the potential of each essence's vibration in you're watercolor work.

Each class will be geared for all levels of experience in watercolor work but please limited to adults and children over 13 years of age.

3. Greens for the Blues & the Rest of the Nervous System

We no longer question that dis-connection from nature alone can contribute to depression and other classic mental illnesses. We know that food and herbal medicine are extremely important and effective. This class looks at herbs important for helping with depression, anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, dis-connections, bipolar conditions and many other painful states of being and how herbal medicine--in particular native and naturalized plants of California--can heal. Students will learn the properties and uses of many native and naturalized plants, as well as some foreigners, that aid in optimal mental stability and peace.

Aphrodisiacs! Just the thought of the word can send a tingle of anticipation down your spine. Two herbs that seem to produce the best results are Kava Kava and Damiana. 2. Incense Making: The Basics

First, a brief talk about incense and charcoal do's and don'ts. Then we will break up into two groups to test, sniff and blend a variety of herbs into 2 incenses. One per group will make an Altar (Blessing) Incense. The other will make a Purification Incense. Each group will blend enough so everyone has samples of both. 

3. Smudging: Inviting Nature Home

Smudging = purifying a space of toxic energy, feelings, thoughts or spirits with the scent and smoke of a smoldering aromatic plant. Learn how to change your atmosphere to attract healing, positive powers. This class will cover many smudging herbs that you may not have considered. Have you ever thought of smudging with fennel? Join me to learn why you would.

We will chat, play a game, explore ideas and feelings, hear stories, make things to care for ourselves and prepare for the Maiden' s Rites of Passage Ceremony to be held Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m.

1. Easy Herbal Crafts

Come and join in the fun and make some cool stuff. We will make a refreshing Lavender Spritzer, some relaxing Bath Salts, a sweet citrus skin refresher, and fuzzing, fizzy bath bombs.

2. Make a Gnome and a Gnome Home

We will begin by making a cute little gnome from felt and sheep wool. Then move on to creating a home for the little gnome out of a gourd and other natural material that can be placed in your garden for many summer days of play.

3. Needle Felting

Discover some of the amazing toys you can make with some wool and a felting needle. If you are a beginner at felting come and make a colorful ball. For the more advanced students, try your hand at making a goddess, animal or allow nature to inspire you.
