1. Natural Dye Workshop, part 1
In this hands-on workshop we will dye wool yarn and raffia three different colors. The dyes used in the workshops vary with seasons and availability, but we may use such dyes as walnut leaf brown, madder root red, and onion skin or marigold yellow. We start by preparing the dyebaths and a mordant bath with alum. Plant materials are simmered and strained in water to yield a dye. Fibers are put first in the mordant bath, then in the dyebath, then rinsed and dried. The natural colors from plants are beautiful! Students take home their yarn and raffia to use in knitting and basketry projects. They now know enough about dyeing with plants to do it on their own.

1. Rainwater Harvesting, part 1
Water is the life blood of our planet. All life thirstily craves water to survive. But while we may be obsessed with oil, we are not an oil-based culture; we are a water-based one. Sadly, by 2025, scientists expect that 2 out of 3 people will not have direct access to clean water. This workshop provides an introduction to rainwater harvesting techniques, products and installation options. Rainwater harvesting is viable option that enables each of us to:

  • Increase water availability for potable and non-potable uses.
  • Offset county and state water restrictions.
  • Save money on water and energy bills.
  • Reduce storm water runoff and non-point source pollution.
  • Cultivate water retention and ground hydration.
  • Acquire L.E.E.D. certification points.
  • Increase the value of any property.
  • Reduce reliance on aging water infrastructure.
  • Empower us all to be part of the sustainable water solutions.

Isn’t it time you made sure you have water for your family or business no matter what?

3. Graywater Reuse Options
Recent changes in California graywater laws now encourage the reuse of graywater. Graywater includes used water from bathtubs, showers, and bathroom wash basins, and water from clothes-washers and laundry tubs. It shall not include waste water from kitchen sinks or dishwashers.” This workshop reviews these new graywater laws and provides tangible options for installing graywater systems, including newly developed graywater filters that provide intensive filtration for graywater reuse.
